“Fingermark” Fish Speciation

Proteomics International has developed a rapid, precise test for identification of fish species. The test (patent pending) determines whether a fish sample is or is not what it is claimed to be. If the sample is mislabelled and is not what it is claimed to be, the test provides positive identification through a process of database matching.
This is particularly valuable as the fishing industry is one of the most vulnerable to substitution and product mislabelling. Using protein signatures, the outcome of testing provides detailed data and lends itself to forensic application, unlike the "all or none" approach of DNA testing. The methodology works accurately with both cooked and raw samples and is readily applicable to other agricultural products. Proteomics International is expanding its partnerships with the seafood industry to develop a comprehensive database of protein signatures.
